Difference between Primary Protection and Backup Protection:

The difference between primary protection and backup protection is given in table below

Sl no Primary Protection Backup Protection
1 It is designed to protect the component parts of the power system. (i.e) main protection. It is the second line of define in case of failure of the primary protection.
2 It is designed to operate instantaneously. It is designed to operate with sufficient time delay.
3 Only faulty element above will be discounted. Larger part of the power system is disconnected.
