Window Type Air Conditioner or Room Air Conditioner:
Window type air conditioner used to condition the air of a particular space occupied by human beings i.e., office room, residential room etc. It has automatic operation to cool and humidify the air. A window type air conditioner is shown in Fig. 9.13. It consists of a case divided into two parts by a partition with a small opening at the top as the outdoor part and indoor part. The outdoor portion consists of a hermetically sealed motor compressor unit, condenser, motor driven fan and a tray. This portion partitioned by a portion L into two parts is provided with a left hand side opening.
Working Principle:
The indoor portion consists of evaporator, motor driven fan, remote bulb, refrigerant, control, a control panel, an air filter, power connector and a tray. This portion is further subdivided into two parts by opening on the right hand side. A pipeline connects the two trays in the inner and outer parts. A capillary line control through a refrigerant filter connects the condenser to the evaporator. Evaporator is connected to the compressor by a suction pipeline. These units are usually fitted flush with window still on inside having attractive frontage. On outside it is supported on brackets and projects beyond the wall. The front and back of the inner and outer portions of the cooler is fitted with shutters. These shutters are adjustable at different inclinations according to the requirements.
The working substance is a vapour which readily evaporates and condenses. The most popular substances are ammonia, freon, carbon dioxide etc.
As the unit is put into operation, the low pressure vapour through the suction pipeline is drawn from the evaporator and passed to the compressor. The compressor delivers it at high pressure to the condenser. In the condenser, the vapour gets condensed and the heat is removed from the refrigerant vapour. The liquid refrigerant collected at its lower coils is passed through the filter into the capillary tube control before flowing back at low pressure into the evaporator coils.
The low pressure liquid refrigerant inside the evaporator coils quickly picks up from its surface. The air is drawn from inside the room through a filter from the lower portion of the unit by a motor driven fan. This air is passed over the evaporator coils. The cooled air from the evaporator coils surface is supplied back into the room. Due to dehumidification of moisture from the circulating air, the moisture after flowing downward from the surface of the evaporator coils is collected at the bottom of the evaporator into a pan. This moisture in the pan flows due to gravity into another pan placed in the outdoor portion at the bottom of the condenser. The moisture helps to cool the compressor and condenser due to evaporation.
In the compressor and condenser compartment, the fan draws in the outside air from the lower portion of the unit, circulate it over the condenser and discharges front the upper portion of unit to the outside due to mounting of the compressor and condenser in a particular design. The heat of the vapour refrigerant is taken away by the air during its passage through the condenser and it is cooled into the liquid form. The unit automatically stops as soon as the desired temperature is reached inside the room. The automatic operation of the unit is accomplished by a valve at the control panel.
Main advantages of window type air conditioner are given below :
- Saving in installation and field assembly labour.
- Exact requirement of each separate room is met whereas a central system cannot meet the individual needs of separate rooms.
- Zoning and duct work is eliminated.
- Only those rooms which need cooling will have their units running, whereas the central plant will have to operate all the time for the sake of only a few rooms.
- Failure of unit affects a single room where as all the rooms are affected when failure occur in the central system.
- Low initial cost.
- flexibility of operation.
- Starting with only a few rooms, the air conditioning may be progressively extended to other rooms without spending a large sum from the very beginning.
